When it comes to long distance relationships, we all know that they could (and most likely will) get pricey…
Although they can get expensive, it doesn’t make the relationship any less worth it. Whether you’re tight on money, or just need to figure out how to save those dollars aside for your LDR travels, we came up with some tips to help you figure it out.
So, below is some advice on how to afford a long distance relationship!
1: Learn to manage your money.
This is probably the most important rule. Money is easy to make, but hard to keep. Obviously we need to spend money to survive, (sounds dramatic, but it’s true!) so don’t not spend anything just to save money. It’s okay to continue to treat yourselves and buy essentials, but next time you’re out – try to not just impulsively buy. If you see a cute shirt, think – “do I really need this?” Trust me, I LOVE spending money on food and clothes, but to afford a long distance relationship, you have to cut back. All that money adds up!
2. Start your own company.
I know, this is much easier said than done. However, it’s possible! Think of what your passion is. For example, when my boyfriend and I started dating, we discussed our passions and how we can monetize them. We both share a huge passion for social media management, so we started a company called ‘Infinite Management‘. I had no experience in owning a business, but now 2 years later, we are international! We have clients based all around the USA and UK – so yes, it’s possible! If you’re interested in fashion, start a fashion blog, or look into drop shipping. If you’re interested in art, start selling your work! There are so many different possibilities. Just think about what you love to do and how you can make money from it.
3. Sell your old belongings.
Let’s be real, you probably have tons of clothes, shoes, and/or toys that you have sitting around your house that you don’t use anymore. If you don’t need it – get rid of it! There’s tons of places that you can sell your old items online. For example, Facebook has a whole marketplace, or look into Craigslist, or Poshmark.
4. Plan out your visits.
There are certain times of the year when traveling is more expensive. Try to plan your trips to not be around those dates. For example, spring time is usually more pricey because people are traveling for spring break and unfortunately, airlines take advantage of that! So, to work around this, do your research and plan ahead!
5. Get a airline miles credit card.
If you’ll be traveling quite frequently, check out a travel card! When you use your card, you get points that can then be used for flights… The miles will rack up and sooner or later, you’ll have enough points to use towards a free flight!
