How to Stay Positive When You’re Apart From Your Partner
Long distance relationships can be a pain in the butt to deal with… You have this person who is the love of your life, however, they’re constantly not able to be physically there with you. It truly stinks! At the time of writing this blog, I’m engaged to my fiancé, Sam. We’ve been together for 4 years, we’re literally engaged, yet we still have to spend months apart. At the start of my relationship, I was also looking up how to stay positive, because I had no idea where to even start! Although the distance is a huge negative to LDRs, I think it’s fair to say that these types of relationships are so incredibly special.
If you’ve recently started a long distance relationship, then it’s important to remember that things will get better eventually. One day, there won’t be any distance between you and your partner, so hold on to that thought! I’ll be honest, sometimes it’s going to be hard to stay positive. However, I’ve realized that when you think negatively, you feel negative. So, by thinking positively, you’re guaranteed to be in a better mood. How exactly do you do that?
Here are some tips on how to stay positive!
1. Allow yourself to feel how you feel
If you’re like me, then you’re a super emotional person. Every time I say goodbye to my partner, I cry like crazy! If you do too, then just know that that’s okay! Keeping your emotions bottled up is one of the worst things you can do. Eventually, all your emotions will come out at once and it will be overwhelming. So, if you’re upset that your partner isn’t with you, don’t be afraid to cry. It sounds sad when you think about it, but just remember that there’s a light at the end of the tunnel. You’ll see your partner again soon!
2. Talk to your friends/family
This goes along with the point above. You don’t need to sit in your room alone and cry it out. Reach out to your friends and family and tell them how you’re feeling. Friends and family are there to listen. Think about it, have one of your friends ever vented to you about a boy or girl problem they were going through? Most likely! So, it’s fair that you get to talk about your problems/feelings, too. You’ll be able to get advice from the people who love and care for you.
3. Start a new hobby
One of the best ways to feel positive is to take up a new hobby! Whether it’s something that helps you be creative like writing, or painting, or something relaxing like music, or yoga. Starting a new hobby will keep your mind occupied and it will help you feel some sort of accomplishment. Plus, next time you see your partner, you can show off what you’ve learned! You can both even take up that hobby together!
4. Exercise
Trust me when I say, I used to despise exercising, LOL! It could be a lot of work and it’s not ideal to get all sweaty! However, once I started exercising more, I started to feel better not just in my body, but in my mind, too. Exercising is a healthy way to stay positive, stay active, and it’s a great form of distraction. Now, you don’t have to go sign up for your local gym, there are tons of exercises you can do at home, or alternatively, you can just go jogging through your neighborhood! You got this!
5. Stay away from negative influences
Whether you have a friend who is constantly negative, or you have had problems with drugs or alcohol, you need to stay clear of those influences. If there is someone in your life who does bad things or makes you feel down when you’re with them, do not spend your time with them. Even if you’ve known them your whole life, they’re not worth the negativity that they bring to the table. When you’re with positive people, you will start to feel the same. You’re the average of the people you hang out with. If you are a recovering alcoholic or a big drug user, then stay clear of all those things. I know that being away from your partner is hard, but using those things will only make things worse.
6. Video chat with your partner
Just because you’re not physically with your partner, doesn’t mean you can’t virtually be with them! When you video chat, you get to see them through the screen. You can laugh together, blow kisses to each other, and talk about anything you want. Of course, it’s not ideal as you’d rather be there with your partner, but during your time apart, video chatting really does help you to feel more positive.
7. Don’t overthink
When you overthink, your mind starts to wander to unwanted places! You will start to think negatively and you’ll bound up making yourself upset. So, try not to overthink. I know that’s much easier said than done, however, it’s something you’re going to have to try! Instead of thinking “I wonder if I’m ever going to see my partner again”, start saying “I wonder when I’m going to see my partner again” Remind yourself that you WILL see your partner! It’s just a matter of time. There’s no point being negative and thinking about if your relationship is over with!
