One of the most important aspects of a relationship is trust…
Learning how to trust someone isn’t an easy task – especially when that someone lives miles and miles away…
Whether you’ve been cheated on in a previous relationship, or just started a new one, trust has to be earned in order for your relationship to be healthy. I’ll be honest, it took me months to trust my boyfriend. It was my first relationship, he lived in a different continent, and I didn’t know what to expect. At the end of the day, who really does?!
So, to help you feel more secure in your relationship,
Here are some tips on how to trust someone!
1. Be open with them
You both need to be 100% honest with each other. Relationships are two-sided. If you don’t trust your partner, there will always be tension on their side because they know you don’t feel secure and vice versa. To overcome this, you both need to be as open as you can. Talk about your feelings, tell them exactly why you feel this way,, and what they can do to help. Nothing can be resolved if you don’t talk about it!
2. Give them space
If you’re constantly texting your partner things like “send me your location” or “who are you with right now?”, chances are it’ll push them away. Obviously you have every right to know where your partner is and with who, but if every time they’re going out, you’re down their neck, it’s going to cause an unnecessary fight. Give them space – if nothing goes wrong, it’s some proof they can be trusted!
3. Think about why you don’t trust them
Okay, now this is where you’ll really have to sit down and think about what’s going on inside your head. Ask yourself:
- Why do I not trust them?
- Have they ever done something to betray my trust?
- If so, how can we fix this?
- What have I done for them to trust me, and how can I implicate that so I can trust them?
Sometimes you won’t have an explanation, and that’s okay. BUT, if they haven’t given you a reason not to trust them, then you just need to reassure yourself that everything is okay and you might just be overthinking!
4. Create boundaries
When you’re with your partner, you need to communicate and figure out what you’re both comfortable and uncomfortable with. This will set some ground rules for your relationship. Think about what would make or break your relationship… That way, they know not to do that certain thing, which in return won’t cause any problems!
5. Make promises to each other
This sounds a bit silly at first, but hear us out! If you ask your partner to do something for you – even something as simple as them calling you after work – and they do it, it’ll help make you trust them (and vice versa!) Little tasks can go a long way. Just showing each other that you can rely on one another for anything will help you gain trust in the end.
